Description:
When this performance was danced in 1991, the Soviet Union and communism was approaching a complete collapse. At that time, the ballet company was known as the Kirov Ballet and the theatre was known as the Kirov Theatre. Today, the historical names, prior to the Russian Revolution, have been restored with the Mariinsky Ballet performing in the Mariinsky Theatre.
Clearly, many things...
What has been defeating him and hopefully will continue to defeat him is a school on Rossi street which currently Gergiev has no control over. That school, the Vaganova Academy of Russian Ballet, is under the direction of Asylmuratova and having many former Kirov dancers as it's teachers, such as Veronika Ivanova, who had her first class in the 2008 5th year girls, who will graduate in 2013. Elena Sherstneva, Zarema in this 1991 performance, has been one of the top character teachers at Vaganova for several years. Under the guidance of Asylmuratova and a slew of talented ex-Kirov dancers as teachers, the Vaganova School has continued the great Vaganova tradition of producing dancers, unlike any other school in the world. It is this school on Rossi Street that has continued providing the greatness that has made the Mariinsky Ballet the best company in that theatre and will continue to be the best company in that theatre . Even Gergiev is not able to defeat the Vaganova School. I doubt that even Putin would be allowed to close the school down to aid his friend, Gergiev.
For many people who loved the Kirov Ballet, they will argue that the Mariinsky is not what the Kirov used to be. In some respects that is true, but a common complaint is that the dancers of today have lost the artistry of the past and have become more like flashy gymnasts. It is a fact that extreme flexibility and high extensions have become predominant, but that does not detract from artistry. Since the Vaganova School required all students to graduate after their 9th year, there have been graduating classes in 2008, 2009 and 2010, Just those graduating classes alone have produced dancers of great artistry and one with great potential, although she has not been given any roles to display her artistry. The latter is 2008 graduate, Anastasia Nikitina, who clearly has the potential to become a principal dancer, if given the opportunities. The 2009 graduates had two phenomenal ballerinas with great artistry and exceptional dramatic gifts in Yulia Stepanova and Nadezhda Batoeva. The 2010 graduates most likely dancer to success is the tall Viktoria Brileva, but the jewel in the crown of the 2010 graduates is the unique, Oksana Marchuk, with her own special artistic gifts and an exuberant personality and smile, unlike any ballerina in Mariinsky history. Certainly, Asylmuratova and her teachers will continue producing the great dancers of today and the future and unless Putin closes down Vaganova, Gergiev will lose..
